Expeditions, tours, and learning opportunities at Utooni Development Organization

Want to experience an exciting expedition tour with excellent learning opportunities? Then visit us at Utooni Development Organization.

We are a Non-Governmental Organization working with community self help groups in Eastern Province. Although the area suffers from chronic dry seasons, it is rich in natural resources that can be harnessed and utilized in a sustainable manner to promote community development. Utooni Development Organization identified this unique opportunity in 2005 and started projects that have improved the lives of many households in the area.

sand dam construction in progress

Volunteers from the local community and from around the world may help with construction of the sand dams. There are also many other ways to serve.

Our main activities are

  • Sand dam construction
  • Tree planting of indigenous drought-resistant species
  • Terracing to catch silt from otherwise filling the sand dams
  • Improved crop production, using drought-resistant crops and conservation agriculture.
  • Community to community participatory learning exchanges

We also train and encourage the use of simple appropriate technologies that are affordable, accessible and relevant to the local communities. Through the years, we have worked directly with community self-help groups and enabled them to transform their environment in a sustainable manner; improve water supplies, food production, incomes and health security.

Our unique projects provide valuable insights and exciting learning opportunities to professionals, donors and partners in Agriculture, Research and Development (AR&D). We encourage all to visit our offices at Kola, Machakos for more information.
